H.A. Smith Painting has been in business for over 100 years. Our company has always been highly regarded for offering the best of quality service and products. H.A. Smith is owned and operated by the Dotzel Family, Joseph and his sons Jim and Tom. In 1968 Joe Dotzel entered into partnership with Herb Smith and bought the painting company in 1972. Joe was taught the trade by his father George Dotzel and painted with him for 24 years before purchasing the business. H.A. Smith’s Shop, now located on 121 Water Street in Wilkes-Barre, Pa was purchased in 1975 from Robert Postupak.

Painting Churches
In 1982 H.A. Smith Painting began specializing in churches. This was inspired by Joe Dotzel’s strong faith and dedication to the house of God. Joe’s sons Jim and Tom had started with the business a few years before and became skilled craftsmen of church painting. Stenciling, gold leafing and decorative paint finishes became their expertise. H.A. Smith Painting has now painted over 200 churches! Five years ago the fourth generation was added to the business. Joe Dotzel’s grandson, Erik finished his apprenticeship and has begun working in the family business. H.A.
